Positive news from Ireland, as Gas Networks Ireland (GNI) connects the first biomethane plant to the Irish gas grid.
Bia Energy have developed a €90mn biomethane facility in Huntstown, Co. Dublin, one of the seven companies to date which have received Irish Government Assistance from the National Biomethane Strategy Capital Grant Scheme.
The plant is expected to inject 120 GWh of biomethane annually, enough to heat 10,000 homes. The plant will also displace approximately 3,000 tonnes of chemical fertiliser each year with bio-fertiliser, produced from the digestate at the AD plant.
This announcement brings Ireland in line with Northern Ireland, which connected its first biomethane plant in 2023. However progress has been slow in NI since then due to a lack of Government Support.
The announcement in Ireland shows what is possible with clear policy signals and appropriate levels of support. NI has the potential to build a strong resilient homegrown source of energy. Read more about the opportunities here.
