Scotland is sitting on a renewable gas goldmine that could transform how the country heats its homes. A new report from the Green Gas Taskforce, backed by gas network operator SGN, finds that biomethane could supply around half of Scotland's gas demand by 2050, enough to heat 76% of Scottish homes while slashing carbon emissions.
The numbers are striking: production could scale from roughly 1TWh today to 19TWh by 2050, unlocking £10bn in economic value and supporting 8,000 jobs, many in rural communities. Crucially, 85p of every pound invested would stay within the UK economy.
In Northern Ireland, the potential is even greater. With a strong agricultural sector, as well as wastewater from NI Water, there is the potential to displace over 80% of our gas distribution demand, with the right levels of investment, helping to unlock 3,000 jobs by 2050.
