Europe has reached a new biomethane milestone, with annual production capacity surpassing 8 billion cubic metres for the first time, according to the European Biogas Association’s European Biomethane Map for 2026.
Annual production capacity has grown by an impressive 17% YoY compared to 2025, as growing investor confidence and rising political attention help bolster the industry.
The report outlines however, that production remains well below the true potential, which could see biomethane production more than double across Europe by 2030.
Biomethane is a like for like replacement for natural gas, created using waste by products such as farmyard manure and sewage sludge. With the right level of investment, Northern Ireland can join Europe in harnessing our world famous agricultural sector to produce home grown energy, providing energy security, whilst decarbonising our gas supply and improving our water quality.
