Phoenix Energy welcome the publication of the draft Climate Action Plan (CAP) for 2023-2027.

Since 1996, Phoenix Energy has led the way in decarbonising Northern Ireland’s domestic and industrial heating, providing a cleaner alternative to oil and solid fuels, which has led to a cumulative prevention of 14 million tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

The draft CAP recognises the immediate benefits of switching to gas, and highlights the additional carbon savings which could be delivered if those properties that remain on oil where gas network is available, make the switch to gas.

Switching as many homes and businesses off oil and onto gas is a key driver of carbon savings in this carbon budget period.

Phoenix Energy is working closely with the Department for Economy, the Utility Regulator, and local producers and developers to foster and support biomethane development in Northern Ireland. Injection of biomethane into the local gas network will allow gas users to transition to a renewable source of energy without any change to their existing appliances.

We were pleased to see the benefits of Biomethane highlighted in the CAP, such as ‘lower emissions on a cross-sectoral basis, recognising that a local biomethane sector has the ability to lower emissions for the agricultural sector as well as industrial and domestic heating.
