Green Gas Taskforce asks new Prime Minister to recognise Biomethane in UK ETS.

News Story

July 2026 saw the Green Gas Taskforce (GGT) make a renewed call for recognition of biomethane in the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS).

Writing to Andy Burnham, the new Prime Minister, the group asked the UK Government to expediate the zero-rating of biomethane in the UK ETS.

This simple change would unlock demand for grid injected biomethane, boosting domestic gas production, and helping reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels.

With no technical barrier in place, the time is right to amend the UK ETS, and recognise biomethane, and boost the UK’s energy security.
