In a new report issued by the National Energy Systems Operator (NESO) of Great Britain, NESO have renewed its support for Biomethane, recognising the benefits it can provide in a whole systems approach, and for the first time, recognising its potential to offer negative carbon emissions, through carbon capture.
Biomethane is a low carbon gas produced from waste products using Anaerobic Digestion (AD) It has a wide range of end use cases from heat, to transport and power generation.
With as much as 120 TWh of sustainable biomethane potential in the UK, it has the potential to be a major contributor to the UK’s energy needs, offering a like for like replacement for natural gas in heating as well as dispatchable power generation.
In Northern Ireland, due to our large agricultural sector relative to a smaller gas demand, there is the potential to displace 90% of our current gas demand with low carbon biomethane, immediately reducing the carbon emissions from every business and home connected to the gas grid.
