Portugal to inject Hydrogen blend into national gas grid

In June 2025 permission has been granted for a pilot project injecting a 10% blend of hydrogen into Portugal’s Gas Transmission network.

This 18 month pilot project, part of the H2REN programme, will inject hydrogen into a section of the transmission network feeding the Braga district distribution network.

A 10% blend has been chosen to allow the performance of existing infrastructure to be suitably tested, and is expected to have no impact on customers who will see no discernible change in their gas supply.

The pilot study will also test the co-ordination procedures between transmission and distribution operators and test a new gas quality monitoring system in the distribution network.

The trial shows growing confidence in the benefits of hydrogen blending from the European Union, highlighting the benefits of decarbonising national gas grids, and reducing emissions for all connected customers, without the need to retrofit potentially expensive alternative solutions.
