East Down Athletic Club this week celebrated the launch of the EDAC Rollercoaster Races, in association with Phoenix Energy, at Downpatrick Race Course where the event will take place, in the lead up to the Jimmy’s 10k road race.
The Rollercoaster Event had been established by the club a number of years ago but this year’s event, taking place on Saturday 10th March at Downpatrick Race Course, promises to be bigger and better than before thanks to the support of Phoenix Energy.
Junior runners will have the opportunity to participate in a race for their age group, with all entrants receiving a medal. Phoenix Energy will also provide a ‘Fuelling Station’ with energy drinks and snacks and giveaways to help fuel the runners on the day.
Speaking about the new partnership, East Down Athletics Club race organiser, Joe Quinn, said, “Jimmy’s 10k race is the most popular event in the local racing calendar and always attracts a large number of runners. As a club, we try to ensure our events are inclusive and so we first started the Rollercoaster Races a number of years ago to provide an event for our junior runners.”
“We are delighted that we are able to give the Rollercoaster Races a welcome boost this year, thanks to the support of Phoenix Energy. This event is a unique opportunity to run in a superb venue with grandstand viewing. All races will take place on the perimeter track, providing a safe competitive arena. Last year nearly 200 children took part across the age groups and we expect even more this year. I would encourage all young people to get involved and for everyone to come along for what promises to be a fantastic day out.”

About the Rollercoaster Races
Registration: Entries for all races will be taken on the day. Opens 9.30 – closes 10.30 for all Junior events. Seniors can register until 30 minutes before start time.
First race: 11am
- P3 Boys and Girls
- P4/5 Boys and Girls
- P6/P7 Boys and Girls
- (Special shields for the Best Boys and Girls P6/7 Primary School Teams (first 4 finishers to count) over a 1,000 metres distance
- Under 13 Boys and Girls will compete over 1.5K
- Under 15 Boys and Girls will compete over 2K
- Final event (Time TBC) -Senior race – 5K – a good sharpener before Jimmy’s 10k the following week! The bookies will be looking out for form.
