UK Government announces latest tranche of hydrogen funding

The UK hydrogen economy received a boost as the UK Government announced the latest Hydrogen Allocation Round 2 (HAR2) shortlist of projects.

27 electrolytic projects were shortlisted across England, Scotland and Wales to support the decarbonisation of industry, power, transport and heating.

However, it was disappointing that, as with HAR 1, no Northern Ireland based project was shortlisted.

NI has several promising homegrown hydrogen projects under development, and with high levels of curtailed wind energy locally, hydrogen could play an important role in the decarbonisation of the local economy.

As outlined in the Energy Strategy Action Plan 2025, the upcoming Department for the Economy hydrogen consultation will hopefully outline in greater detail how the NI Executive will support this important green industry and unlock the region-wide economic benefits.
