Local cross-fit and weightlifting star Lucy McGonigle has been selected as one of six sports stars across a range of sporting disciplines to be given a boost thanks to the Phoenix Energy Sports Bursary Programme.
Designed to fuel sporting ambition, the Phoenix Energy Sports Bursary helps athletes competing locally and internationally reach their potential by contributing to the costs of equipment, training or travel, enabling them to compete on the global stage.
14-year-old Lucy has recently returned from The CrossFit Games in Wisconsin where she placed second in the world in her age-group. Lucy is also the current UK weightlifting champion in her age-group and is gearing up for the Junior Weightlifting Championships later this year.
Lucy will utilise the Phoenix Energy Sports Bursary to help with the costs of training, travel to international competition and equipment, all of which will help her development.
Presenting Lucy with the Bursary, Jonathan Martindale, Director of Business Development at Phoenix Energy said: “The Phoenix Energy Sports Bursary Programme was established to help promising local athletes achieve their goals by making a contribution to help with costs associated with their development within their chosen sporting field.
“After a year like no other where coronavirus restrictions have significantly impacted training and competition opportunities, Lucy has shown incredible determination and tenacity in adapting her training and identifying the areas she needs to develop in order to excel. We are delighted to play a small part in helping Lucy achieve her sporting ambitions and wish her every success in the coming years.”
