On 27th February, a new anaerobic digestion (AD) plant opened in Lincolnshire as a joint venture between Future Biogas and AstraZeneca UK. In this partnership, Future Biogas will exclusively operate the plant to support AstraZeneca’s operations in the UK through a private financial agreement.
The Moor Bioenergy Plant in Lincolnshire is set to supply 100 GWh of renewable energy to AstraZeneca each year, providing clean heat for all of the company's research & development and manufacturing in the UK.
Futhermore, the plant is expected to reduce AstraZeneca UK’s CO2e emissions by 18,000 tonnes annually, thanks to innovative carbon capture technology. This technology allows the captured carbon to be re-used in other industries or sequestered underground.
This unique collaboration between AstraZeneca UK and Future Biogas enables the plant to operate without government subsidies. By utilising energy crops as feedstock and implementing cutting-edge carbon capture methods, this AD plant stands out in the industry. Read more from Future Biogas here.
The opening of this plant demonstrates that, with the right scale, support and technology, the costs associated with biomethane production can be significantly reduced. Therefore, Phoenix has been calling on the Northern Ireland Department for the Economy to support the introduction of a regional biomethane pathfinder designed to help facilitate the launch of innovative and technologically advanced AD plants.
